Paxil, like Zoloft, Lexapro, Prozac and Celexa is in a class of medications called SSRI’s or Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors
Paxil was approved by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) in 1992 and is used to treat a number of medical conditions including: Depression, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Anxiety Disorders, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder.
Paxil is manufactured by SmithKline Beecham Pharmaceuticals and is said to be the most selective of the SSRI’s which, in turn, causes serotonin levels in the brain to go back to normal quickly. Although, there are serious side effects related to the use of Paxil including: Suicidal Thinking, Suicidal Behavior, Major Depressive Disorder, Difficulty Breathing, Skin Rash, Hives, Depression, Hallucinations, Swelling of the tongue and/or face, Nausea, Drowsiness, Asthenia (lack of energy), Tremors, Nervousness, Dizziness, Insomnia, Sweating, and Ejaculatory Delay.

Paxil was assigned the risk category ‘D’ by the FDA, meaning that Paxil was shown to potentially cause adverse effects in infants whose mothers take Paxil during pregnancy. According to a study of the Swedish National Registry data – Infants whose mothers took Paxil during pregnancy have double the chance of being born with cardiovascular malformations. In the United States – studies show that one and a half to two times the rate of birth defects risk while using Paxil.
Class action lawsuits resulting in GlaxoSmithKline paying nearly $1 Billion U.S Dollars in settlements have arisen. In 1998 a suit was filed against SmithKline Beecham pharmaceuticals after a man shot his family and himself, in 2001 a suit was filed against Glaxo after claims the company buried research proving suicidal risk.
